Money & MotherHood
“How is this going to make money?”
A friend’s husband asked her when she told him that she wanted to rent a tiny studio ($250/month) to work on her lifelong dream of making art.
I wish I could have stepped in and answered:
Hey hubby (who btw has a very well-paid job in banking),
Your wife just saved you more than a $1million in the past 4 years.
While you went off to work, she gave birth, breastfed and kept your children alive night and day.
If she were to have been hospitalized, put into jail, or godforbid died, this is what having a family would have cost you (and we are only talking money):
-average cost for 1 invitro fertility treatment…………………..$12,000
-average cost for a surrogate pregnancy………………………. $110,000
-average cost for a baby night nurse for 1 year
(it’s more than 1 year to raise a child, but whatevs)……………$438,000
-average cost for a housekeeper for 1 year………………………$61,000
-average cost for a babysitter for 1 year………………………….$44,000
-average cost for a personal chef for 1 year………………….….$13,000
TOTAL: $678,000
She birthed two of your short crazies.
So that’s double.
GRAND OF TOTAL: $1,356,000
She did all of this for FREE.
Although it did temporarily cost her; her body, her nights, her career, and her aspirations.
Now that she is finally finding herself again, you may NOT ask her to give up on her dream.
Nope, unless you want to kill her spirit. And by that, I mean, kill her. And your partnership. And your kids.
And this will cost you and your legacy much, MUCH more in the long run.
Dear husband: smile, and give a nice bouquet of flowers/ $250 a month for a studio/ a retreat/ or a private jet as a token of your gratitude for the healthy offspring you have.
For the record, we all know it’s not about the money. There is also a cost to fatherhood, so dear dads, please start living your dreams ASAP too.
And dear mothers, never stop monetizing your dreams.
So yeah, mama, “How is this going to make money?“
